Stamp Collecting Equipment

Compared to many other hobbies, stamp collecting requires very little in the way of equipment.  Nevertheless, there are some necessary items which one should have on hand, as well as some things which, though not necessary, can make the pursuit of the hobby more enjoyable.

Philatelic equipment generally falls under a few major headings, those being:

  • Storage-related, which includes albums, stockbooks, glassine envelopes, etc.;
  • Handling-related, which includes stamp tongs;
  • Identification-related, which includes stamp catalogues, perforation gauges, watermark detectors, magnifying glasses, and color guides, and;
  • Maintenance and repair-related, which can include a wide variety of items, including drying books, stamp presses, and the like.
