St Patrick's Day Stamp

65c Stamp

An Post commemorated St. Patrick's Day 2005, with the issue of a new postage stamp on February 17. This beautiful stamp, designed by Paul Raftery, depicts a stained glass window, which is situated in a private residence in Dalkey, Co. Dublin.

As the patron Saint of Ireland, St. Patrick represents a figurehead of Irish identity and was one of the most influential 5th Century missionaries bringing Christianity to Ireland. Stories about Patrick's use of the shamrock to explain the Trinity (i.e. God had three personas - The Father, The Son and the Holy Ghost) or ridding Ireland of snakes, still endure as part of modern St Patrick's Day folklore and custom. He is believed to have died on March 17, circa 460 A.D.

Denominated at 65c, this allows postage paid from Ireland to anywhere in the world. Also available for this issue is a First Day Cover, Postcards, Greeting Cards and a framed Sheetlet with First Day Cover.
